When it was announced that a new version of Supergirl would be airing on television, I knew I would be watching. As a longtime fan of the heroes of Krypton, Superman and his cousin, Kara a.k.a Supergirl, I was curious what this new adaptation would be like. But since it was in the capable hands of Greg Berlanti, I had no doubt it would be something special.
Berlanti’s retelling of the Clark Kent story made Smallville one of the successes of The CW. He’s also the genius behind Arrow and The Flash, so if anyone knows how to take transcend superheroes above what we know, it’s Berlanti.
In Supergirl, we have a heroine just like you and me. Okay, she has superpowers like flight, heat vision and strength but she also has human flaws. Kara is insecure. She is constantly questioning her abilities in comparison to her cousin. She also feels she can’t compete with Lucy Lane, a human and Lois Lane’s sister, for the affections of Jimmy Olsen. At the end of the day, Kara is a young woman trying to do what’s right in a complicated world.
But superpowers or not, Kara is not alone. Supergirl’s real strength is the support of her family, in particular her adopted sister Alex.
Melissa Benoist and Chyler Leigh bring magic to their roles as Kara and Alex Danvers. The alien and the DEO Agent work together to save the world. But they also have disagreements like all sisters. Kara may have superpowers but that doesn’t stop Alex from assuming the bossy older sister role.
Berlanti’s superheroes are not comic book heroes. They makemistakes and bad decisions. They’re prone to anger andalousy. And in Kara Danvers, we have a superhero still growing and learning. She’s not totallcomfort in her superhero skin.
I look orward to seeing Kara continue to navigate her path as Supergirl. As she let’s her emotions determine her choices, Kara is proving to be more human than alien.
Supergirl airs Mondays at 8/7c on TheCW.

Great article. I can’t wait for her to come into her powers more and see her grow as a woman. Definitely a great show.
