Every television show, book and movie has that one character that has a short life span causing you to wonder ‘ What If’ they’d lived. Such is the case with Wentworth’s Meg Jackson.
Governor Meg Jackson was killed off right at the start of the series in the pilot during the infamous prison riot. Her death opened up many subsequent storylines and brought great characters to the Wentworth universe, including the best character to enter Wentworth Correctional after the death of the former, the sadistic Governor Joan Ferguson. I can’t imagine Wentworth Correctional without Governor Ferguson!
But I feel Meg Jackson had potential and it’s a shame that we never got to see her character develop. I would have enjoyed seeing more of her marriage to Will and the “power couple” keeping order over the prisoners.
And what kind of governor was Meg? The glimpse we got was very minimal. I doubt she had the cruelty of Joan Ferguson but she was also no scared lamb like Vera Bennett. I bet she kept the prisoners and officers (including husband Will) in line.
Sadly, we will never know how the ‘Meg regime’ would have played out. But Catherine McClements did an excellent job bringing her to life if only for a short time.
