The writer of the Supernatural books, Chuck Shurley returned to Supernatural just in time to save the world. But how will he do it, by writing a happy ending for Amara? The real answer may (or may not) surprise you.

This article contains spoilers so if you haven’t seen the episode “Don’t Call Me Shurley,” please do not continue reading.

When Supernatural book writer Chuck Shurley disappeared in a puff of smoke at the end of the Season 5 Finale “Swan Song,” speculation started flying that Chuck was more than a Prophet of the Lord. He was in fact, the Lord. But that was six seasons ago and besides for a brief appearance in the two hundredth episode “Fan Fiction,” we haven’t seen hide or hair of Chuck. Until now.

Chuck appeared to Metatron and announced that he was God. He admitted that he took the form of a human to hide on Earth and watch humanity. But now he’s writing his autobiography and wants Metatron to read it over.

I must say that I was one of those who speculated that Chuck was God after he vanished at the end of “Swan Song,” so the revelation in “Don’t Call Me Shurley” was a big ‘I knew it’ moment for me. The confirmation was so well written and answered questions like ‘Where has God been? (traveling) Why didn’t the God EMF/amulet work? (because he turned it off).’

The icing on the cake was the interaction between The Scribe of God and God himself, two writers discussing their work as well as a son telling his father how sad he was after he left him. The scenes explained a lot about God and helped to define the Metatron character.

God’s appearance on Supernatural was well worth the wait. I am happy he turned out to be someone we already cared about like Chuck and not some larger than life character.

Thanks Robbie Thompson for a great script and of course, Rob Benedict for bringing Chuck to life, a god among the many Supernatural characters.
