Demon possession and exorcising demons have become common place in television and movies today.  But in 1973, there was a movie that set the standard for this practice.  That movie was The Exorcist.

Released on December 26, 1973, The Exorcist is based on the book by William Peter Blatty.  The film starred Ellen Burstyn, Linda Blair, Jason Miller and Max von Sydow. Linda Blair played Regan McNeil, a 12-year-old girl who becomes possessed and the efforts of her mother Chris (Burstyn) and priest Damien Karras (Miller) to rid her body of the demonic force.

The Exorcist set a standard for supernatural horror thrillers and featured some of the most terrifying scenes.  Who could forget Regan’s rotating head?  All the visual effects and makeup were stunning.  The Exorcist was the first horror film to be nominated for an Academy Award. And 43 years later, remains a classic of the genre.

On September 26, 2016, a remake with different characters of The Exorcist premiered on television on the FOX network
