The Miss America 2.0 2019 competition airs live Sunday, September 9 on ABC.
Miss America has been the symbol of intelligence, beauty and grace since 1921. Official Synopsis: “The 2019 Competition marks the dawning of a new day for the Miss America Organization. This year’s show will highlight women from all walks of life who are advancing the message of female empowerment through their efforts in the areas of scholarship, talent and social impact. Now with a historic, all-female leadership team paving the way for both the Miss America Organization and the Miss America Foundation, a new era of progressiveness, inclusiveness and empowerment has begun.”
For 97 years the Miss America competition has given young women the opportunity to represent the country using their platform to educate. Additionally, the Miss America organization provides scholarships allowing these ladies to further their education.
In the early days, Miss America was known primarily as a beauty pageant. The contestants were judged on how they looked in swimsuits and evening gowns. But gone now is the swimsuit portion of the competition. On June 5, 2018, it was announced that Miss America contestants would no longer be judged based on their physical appearance and that the national Miss America event would be considered a competition, rather than a pageant, and the titleholders now candidates, rather than contestants. When the program airs on September 9, 2018, the swimsuit competition will be replaced with state titleholders participating in a live interactive session with the judges, “to highlight her achievements and goals in life and how she will use her talents, passion, and ambition to perform the job of Miss America. The young women who have participated in the Miss America competition come from different backgrounds and have faced their own personal challenges such as being hearing impaired.
Miss America has come a long way since those early beauty pageant days but the message remains the same: Miss America is a role model for women everywhere.
