When the 2020 Daytime Emmy Nominations were announced on Thursday, May 21, 2020, General Hospital received a total of 23 nominations.

In this article, our writer Stacy Miller takes a look at Outstanding Young Performer Nominees Eden McCoy (Josslyn Jacks) and Katelyn MacMuellen (Willow Tait).

On General Hospital, Eden McCoy and Katelyn MacMuellen are two young actresses who’ve shown they’ve already mastered their craft.

Eden was twelve when she began playing Jax and Carly’s daughter Josslyn in 2015. Since that time, her acting has reached an intensity and maturity far surpassing her age. After learning her boyfriend Oscar Nero was dying from an inoperable brain tumor, Josslyn realized her fear with the reality of the prognosis had to take a back seat. She was determined to inspire Oscar to fight for his life by encouraging him to participate in a clinical trial. For Christmas, Josslyn gave him an appointment date book. The meaning behind the gift: To remind him he had so many great moments in his life to look forward to and needed a place to keep track of these events.

Sadly, Oscar succumbed to his illness. The scenes following showed Josslyn lamenting over how she’d fallen asleep at the time of Oscar’s passing thus preventing her the opportunity to say goodbye. Next, came survivor’s guilt. Josslyn believed if she experienced even an ounce of happiness she’d be showing disloyalty to her boyfriend’s memory. She also worried as time went by she’d forget him. These were heavy concerns for anyone, especially a teenager. As played by Eden McCoy, Josslyn is a character whose spunk matches her mother Carly’s. I’ve commented numerous times on Twitter how in awe I am of Eden’s acting including her convincing portrayal as Carly’s daughter. Physical similarities aside, through McCoy’s talent you believe Carly and Josslyn are mother and daughter.

This is Eden McCoy’s second Emmy nomination for her role as Josslyn Jacks.

Katelyn MacMullen debuted as Willow Tait on October 18, 2018 playing Aiden Webber’s elementary school teacher. She contacted Charlotte Cassadine’s mother Lulu Falconieri about the little girl bullying Aiden Webber (who also happened to be Charlotte’s cousin). The role could have ended after Willow notified Lulu and Elizabeth (Aiden’s mother) of the bullying with Willow disappearing into soap opera oblivion. But General Hospital writers decided to expand the school teacher’s story by having her connected to swarmy Dawn of Day cult leader David Henry Archer a.k.a Shiloh. In a stoke of genius, viewers learned Willow was the birth mother of Brad Cooper and Lucas Jones’ adopted baby boy. Escaping the cult and her baby’s father (Shiloh), Willow put her son up for adoption. Sadly, Baby Tait died from SIDS shortly after his birth. Further complicating matters, psychopath Nelle Benson convinced Brad to switch the dead baby with her son Jonah to keep the baby from dad Michael and The Corinthos family. For almost two years, the entire Port Charles believed Johan dead not knowing he was alive as Wiley Cooper Jones.

MacMullen reached deep into the depths of her emotional acting chasm in the scene when Willow learned her baby died and Wiley was really Nelle and Michael’s son.

The last General Hospital episodes aired before the soap was forced to shut down production due to COVID-19 featured the court custody battle between Nelle and Michael for Wiley (Michael decided to keep the name Brad and Lucas gave his son. But now Wiley Cooper Jones’ legal name is Wiley Quartermaine Corinthos). Willow married Michael to not only strengthen his case but because of the love she feels for the child she thought as her own.

This is Katelyn MacMullen’s first Emmy nomination for her role as Willow Tait.

Wishing Eden and Katelyn congratulations on their nominations!
