Deathgasm: The Band, The Movie, The Demon Summoners

I found an interesting little horror movie at work this week called Deathgasm and I mean with a title like that I couldn’t not watch it. I scooped it up and watched it super late in the night. The movie was made and set in New Zealand, and made me really want to rewatch What We Do in the Shadows, but this is an entirely different review.

Deathgasm opens with a voice over of the main character, Brodie, explaining that he’s stuck living with his super religious relatives in a crappy little town after his mom got into some trouble with the law. He’s a huge heavy metal fan, but his first, and what he thought would be his only friends, are way more into role playing, pretty sure they are playing D&D, than metal. While the town he lives in sucks, there is a super cool record store. The record store not only has heavy metal stuff, but he finds Zakk, a guy whose just as into metal as him. The two of them start hanging out and wind up breaking into what looks like an abandoned house.

Zakk insists that the lead singer of a band they both love has been hiding there for years. Brodie totally doesn’t believe him, until they find the guy passed out in a room full of random junk. They wind up stealing a record from him, that turns out to have sheet music that looks pretty demonic. Instead of tearing it up or throwing it out, the two guys decide that their newly created band, Deathgasm, should try and play it. When they do things get all kinds of dark and twisted. Any person who hears the music suddenly starts bleeding and turns into what totally looked like an Evil Dead deadite.

The entire town starts turning into an undead demon army, meant to ready the way for The Blind One. Our two main dudes, the two role playing friends, and Brodie’s crush Medina, all have to work together to try and stop demon worshipers and The Blind One himself from destroying their town. There are chainsaws, paintball guns loaded with dice, Hulk hands, and at one point even some weaponized sex toys in the group’s arsenal.

The movie was really funny and reminded me of a raunchier version of The Evil Dead franchise. There is some random full frontal nudity, lots of cursing, and the movie is full of blood, guts and gore. It’s definitely not a serious, deep thinking movie, but if you are a fan of The Evil Dead I think you’d like this movie. It comes out on dvd this Tuesday if you are interested in checking it out.
