Vampires, zombies, teens, and the state of Ohio. Yep, all of those things are in Freaks of Nature, oh and aliens, because aliens are everywhere. Admittedly I had no idea what this movie was about when I decided to watch it, but when I started it I was instantly super excited. I mean Ed Westwick is a sexy vampire with a leather jacket and Keegan-Michael Key is a super angry vampire teacher. Just that should make you want to watch this movie.
Dilford, home of the riblet, is the setting for this teen angst comedy full of supernatural creatures. Dag, the main character, has a huge crush on a girl named Lorelai, Vanessa Hudgens, all we know about him when the movie starts is the fact that he’s obsessed with her. Instead of all the teens just going through puberty, we wind up with them turning into supernatural creatures, well some of them. Then aliens show up. Seriously there’s a lot going on in this movie.

Once the aliens appear things the vampires, humans, and zombies, wind up fighting it out with each other because they somehow think every other group is behind it. Vampires blame the humans, humans blame the vampires, and the zombies just decide no one likes them. We wind up with Dag, a human, Petra, a newly turned vampire, and Ned, a newly bitten zombie, trying to make it through the alien invasion. Things get progressively crazier with our trio trying to save the town and get rid of the aliens. We also get a super random werewolf appearance right near the end.

There are a ton of cameo appearances, besides Key and Westwick, including Patton Oswalt, Denis Leary, Bob Odenkirk, Joan Cusack, Chris Zylka, and Mae Whitman. Seriously it’s just a lot of people popping up throughout the movie. If you’re a Lucifer fan, Rachael Harris, who plays Dr. Linda, makes an appearance in the movie as the mother of two of the main teens. The movie reminded me of a combination of Shaun of the Dead, The World’s End, and like any teen movie about different cliques coming together. It was an alright watch, the acting was funny, but the plot was a little crazy. There was just so much going on, I’m going to say I give it 2.5 nerdy glasses out of 5. Overall it was a fun watch and if you are a fan of horror comedies you should check it out. Though, don’t eat riblets while watching it.
