Live Tweet Movie Fun: The Covenant from @kleffnotes

Sometimes you just want to watch a movie and hangout with some friends, well if these friends aren’t close enough to actually swing by your house you can still watch together through the magic of Twitter. With the release of a new Captain America: Civil War trailer I had gotten to talking about Sebastian Stan, the Winter Soldier in the Marvel Movie Universe, and while some fangirling occurred, it happens I mean that’s why I make my weekly Fangirl Freakout videos, we realized there was another movie with this handsome gentleman in it from the days of our youth, The Covenant.

Whenever I’m asked to describe this movie I say it’s like The Craft meets The Secret Circle, with a tiny dash of The Brothers Grimm. The Covenant is about a group of 17 year old high school guys, about to turn 18, in Ipswich, Massachusetts, who are the most recent descendants of great magical lines. In this plot only men wield magic and at 13 boys receive their power and at 18 their power becomes full when they ascend. All the boys come from money and are seen as prime dating material by all the girls we see in the movie. Now we could just follow these guys through their dating exploits, but instead we see them dealing with a big bad they didn’t expect.

The four main magical men we meet are Caleb, Pogue, Tyler, and Reid and while they think they are the only Sons of Ipswich, they learn that the fifth family, thought to have been killed off during the Salem Witch Trials has a living son. Sebastian Stan plays Chase, the new boy in town, who is definitely someone they underestimated. This movie’s been out since 2006 so I don’t feel bad telling you that Chase is the fifth son and he is super powerful. Through some dark deeds he has managed to double his power and wants to take all the rest of the Ipswich magic.

This movie has terrible ratings online, but I still really enjoy watching it. The soundtrack speaks to my angsty emo teen heart, which makes sense because I first saw this movie as a teenager. The magic fight scenes are pretty cool, there’s floating and really interesting effects. Now I really really don’t like the amount of spiders in this movie. They are so creepy! They crawl inside people and they are just disgusting.

Sebastian Stan plays an amazing villain. He initially appears to be a nice guy, just trying to make friends and that aspect is sweet. When he reveals his true colors though he is great. He even manages to make reciting Little Miss Muffett sound threatening. Stan is my favorite part of this entire movie, I like him even more than the nostalgic angsty music.
