Little Odessa Movie Review from @kleffnotes

The streaming service MUBI is the perfect place for film lovers. This curated movie site shares both old and new features within a variety of categories. As part of their January and February collections they have presented a Sundance Takeover, which began in late January. Two of the features that I had already seen and recommend are But I’m a Cheerleader and Winter’s Bone, which are both still available on the site. I wanted to highlight a movie that I had never seen before and chose to check out Little Odessa, which dropped on February 3rd. Continue reading “Little Odessa Movie Review from @kleffnotes”

Risking the Rapids Book Review from @kleffnotes

Irene O’Garden’s poetic memoir, Risking the Rapids: How My Wilderness Adventure Healed My Childhood focuses a lens on her less than perfect childhood and how a more recent trip with her siblings following a new trauma helped her to work through how her childhood has impacted her life. Through moving prose O’Garden moves between her past and the more recent trip with ease, allowing the reader to relate these periods to each other. Beyond that she allows herself to be completely open with her reader in this touching work. Continue reading “Risking the Rapids Book Review from @kleffnotes”

The Boys Who Woke Up Early Book Review from @kleffnotes

The Boys Who Woke Up Early is a memoir-esque read from A.D. Hopkins set in the fictional town of Early, Virginia. His plot is told through the first person perspective of Stony Shelor as he recounts his youth through his senior year of high school. Throughout this fictional person’s story we are given an examination of race in the South alongside a glimpse into the South in the 1960’s. Miskatonic High Comic Kickstarter from @kleffnotes

Two of my favorite things are the worlds of H.P. Lovecraft and comics and something amazing is bringing these topics together through the drama of high school. Miskatonic High recently kicked off their Kickstarter campaign to create print copies of their first issue. I was able to check out the first and second issue and wanted to share my spoiler free thoughts on the series and why you should support this comic. Queer Representation and Queer Spaces from @kleffnotes

Recently there has been a great deal of discussion online, primarily on Twitter, concerning representation in media specific conventions and how this representation impacts these queer spaces. While no specific convention has been named it has become fairly apparent from comments and from inferencing that the convention in question is ClexaCon. A number of topics have been presented including how inclusive the convention truly is based on how primarily white, cis, and straight their featured guests appear to be. I will note there are some women of color on the featured guest list as well as some out women, though I will admit this number is small. Evil Has a Name @audible_com Review from @kleffnotes

For all you murderinos out there you will understand why I absolutely had to listen to Evil Has a Name on Audible. Seriously, how could I pass up something involving Paul Holes? If you are a little confused, fans of the popular podcast My Favorite Murder are named murderinos and Paul Holes is a criminologist who was this sort of icon of the podcast who has also been a guest. Evil Has a Name: The Untold Story of the Golden State Killer Investigation was written by Paul Holes, Jim Clemente, and Peter McDonnell and primarily narrated by Paul Holes and Jim Clemente. What makes this Audible original so captivating is the use of additional voices, but I will admit the soothing tones of Paul Holes help to make the truly awful crimes more easy to listen to.
