The series Houdini and Doyle is a clever detective drama that recently began airing on Fox in the United States. I was excited to watch this series as soon as I saw the previews because I love anything involving detectives in London, England. Beyond that I have adored the character Sherlock Holmes for as long as I can remember. Now Sherlock might not appear in this series, but his creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle does. Add a touch of the supernatural, the amazing Rebecca Liddiard, and the setting of London in 1901, I knew I’d be hooked. Throughout all my reviews of the first season of Damien, I have maintained that it is a very smart horror show. It wasn’t about the blood and guts that is so popular in today’s horror and it wasn’t about the jump scares and screaming attractive teenagers of yesteryear either. Damien has been able to not only bring in the best of those elements, but also make something entirely its own. It was hard for many to wrap their heads around it at first. They wanted it spoon fed to them. Why think about an antichrist that has a conscience and may not want to do this or even believe it, when he could be out taking over the world already? Now, now, now. I like that showrunner Glen Mazzara and his writers rejected this and instead brought us the thinker that is Damien.
Sadly there’s no new Damien tonight, but this doesn’t mean that we can stop showing how much this new show means to us. We still don’t know if Damien will be getting a second season and we need to keep working to try and get A&E to renew this amazing show.
