It’s a New Year and in 2017, we are excited to see what the year will bring.
For me, I always look forward to my favorite shows returning from winter hiatus to learn what will happen with my favorite characters. One of my new guilty pleasures is the NBC series This Is Us. I can’t get enough of this show. The writing, the characters, the acting, a trifecta of television dramatic magic. The mid season finale episode “Last Christmas” aired on December 6 with a cliffhanger involving the fate of Toby. But there are also other questions left to be answered as viewers explore the lives of The Pearsons. Here’s what I’d like to see happen on This Is Us in 2017.
This article contains spoilers. The opinions expressed here are that of the writer and may differ from those of other viewers.
Toby’s Fate. I love Toby (Chris Sullivan). He is such a great guy and very supportive of Kate (Chrissy Metz). He sought to be there for Kate emotionally and even after they broke up, Toby was still concerned for her feelings. And to be with her for Christmas, Toby suffered through an especially uncomfortable plane ride. The couple reconciled at Randall’s (Sterling K. Brown) house during the Pearsons’ Christmas celebration. But then, Toby falls out from what looks like a heart attack. He is rushed to the hospital and into surgery. Will he survive?
I know that This Is Us loves to stir our feelings and life and death are like ying and yang but I hope that Toby doesn’t die. I want to see more of the character as he adds so much to Kate’s life. This near scare could be a wake up call for both Kate and Toby and cause them to reevaluate their lives.
Jack and Rebecca. Seeing the relationship of Jack and Rebecca (Milo Ventimiglia and Mandy Moore) on This Is Us and their parenting of Kate, Kevin and Randall has been a highlight for me. In 2017, I hope the series will show more on how they met, fell in love and even their wedding. We already know that Rebecca never really envisioned herself as a mother (probably because of her relationship with her own mother) so I’d like to see more of Rebecca’s young life. And what about Jack? Little is known of his pre-Rebecca life so I’d like to see more of that. These characters are not only the parents of Kate, Kevin and Randall, they have a past waiting to be revealed.
Kate, Kevin and Randall. The Pearson children each have interesting stories separately, but I’d like to see more of the sibling relationship between Kate, Kevin and Randall. We already know that Kevin and Randall don’t have a close brother relationship as episodes have touched on their history. We also know that Kate and Kevin are close. But what we don’t know is how Kate and Kevin felt over the loss of their biological brother, the baby that died at childbirth and who was going to be named Kyle. Kate and Kevin are often referred to as twins, but in reality they were part of a triplet set. The original ‘Big Three’. How did Jack and Rebecca explain to them about their other brother and about adopting Randall? How did Kate and Kevin initially take to their new brother? I’d also like to see more of Kate and Randall’s sibling relationship? How do these two feel about each other?
Beth and Randall. We’ve seen Randall in his relationships with his parents and siblings. But little is known of Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) and Randall as a couple. It’s obvious that they have a good marriage and love their children dearly. Beth has stood by her husband as he met and got to know his biological father William (Ron Celphas Jones). She felt guilty keeping the truth from her husband when she learned Rebecca’s secret. But who are they as a couple? I hope for more Beth and Randall scenes in 2017.
The young Pearson children. Kudos to the casting of the young actors who play the Pearson children on This Is Us. They have played their adult counterparts to perfection. Mackenzie Hancsicsak, Parker Bates and Lonnie Chavis make a great Kate, Kevin and Randall). Watching their scenes is always a delight. More Young Kate, Kevin and Randall please This Is Us.
