Brain Food from @kleffnotes: Oatmeal Brains ( @CWiZombie @iZombieWriters )

This week’s iZombie themed treat is a cinnamon oatmeal cookie brain that is sure to please any zombie in your hoard.

Ingredients:

1 cup softened butter

1 cup white sugar

1/2 cup brown sugar ( You can use 1 cup if you choose)

2 eggs

4 1/2 cups quick cooking oats

2 1/2 cups all purpose flour

2 teaspoons baking soda

1 teaspoon salt

1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 theater sized box of Red Hots Candy

Pink food coloring

Red Decorating Icing (optional)

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 Fahrenheit
  2. Stir together butter and both types of sugar
  3. Add in the eggs, stir until well mixed
  4. Add cinnamons, vanilla, baking soda, and salt, stir until mixed
  5. Add 3 cups oats, stir until mixed
  6. Add 2 cups flour, stir until mixed
  7.  Once batter is mixed let sit
  8. Add roughly 1 cup water to an oven safe bowl, pour in full box of Red Hots on medium heat
  9. Stir continuously until candy is melted. (I had some issues melting the Red Hots, please be careful while stirring and should candy get stuck to the bottom of the bowl DO NOT forcefully push at it)
  10. Once melted pour the Red Hot water into your batter, stir until fully incorporated
  11. Add 1 1/2 cups oats and stir until fully combined
  12. Add 1/2 cup flour, again stir until combined
  13. Add 1 teaspoon baking soda and stir
  14. Take pink food coloring and add 9-18 drops (I divided my batter in half and each half took 9 drops to become the desired color)
  15. Once fully mixed let sit (Consider letting it sit for roughly a half hour, I didn’t do this and wound up with very sticky hands)
  16. While batter is resting, prepare cookie sheets (You can either grease them or cover them in aluminum foil)
  17. To make standard sized cookies: take a tablespoon sized ball of dough and place it on the cookie sheet. The balls will need to be roughly 1-2 inches apart as there is some spreading
  18. To make larger cookies: scoop out a ball of dough with your hands (wash them first please) and roll until roughly the size of your palm. Place on cookie sheet at least 4 inches apart, again due to spreading
  19. Bake smaller cookies for 8 minutes and larger cookies for 9 minutes
  20. If you would like to ice your cookies let them fully cool, then using a red icing of your choice draw a brain like pattern

If you want your cookies to be a bit spicier I recommend adding a few more Red Hots. You could even consider putting Red Hots or another cinnamon candy into the batter to add some added crunch to the cookies. I really enjoyed these and will definitely make them again.
