What do you do when you have a friend that works in a field that allows you to see movies before they are officially released? Well you go with them, that’s what! I had the chance to tag along to see the new movie The Revenant. It will be released on January 8th, with sneak previews on the 7th. The movie stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Will Poulter, Domhnall Gleeson, and Lucas Haas, to name a few. This article will be as spoiler free as possible.
This movie is based on the true story on Hugh Glass, a legendary frontiersman. While exploring uncharted wilderness in the 1800s with a hunting party, and after an Indian attack, Hugh Glass is brutally attacked by a grizzly bear. He’s sewn up by his crew, they move out trying to make it home. With Glass’ injuries to severe to make it, he is left behind with a couple members of the crew and his son. When those two leave him for dead and murder his son, Glass must draw on his survival skills. Grief-stricken and fueled by pure vengeance, pure hate, Glass hikes through the wintery lands to track down John Fitzgerald, the former crew member who betrayed and left him for dead.
This is really the most I can tell you without giving anything important away. There are some subtitles when they speak in the Native American language. Glass has some flashback scenes that are dream-like, they really give more to the story. They really went all out on this movie. The grizzly bear attack was exactly as described, brutal. The things that Hugh Glass went through and survived are downright unbelievable. There’s much more to the story but you will have to go and see it to find out. Leonardo DiCaprio was brilliant. He’s one actor who’s always been able to make his roles completely believable, he does not disappoint here. I felt everything he showed. Tom Hardy did another amazing job playing John Fitzgerald. I was truly impressed with this movie. To me, it kind of had a Legend of the Falls/Dances with Wolves feel. It runs close to three hours, however, the movie is so well done and keeps you engaged, you don’t really notice the length. Seriously, DiCaprio deserves an Oscar for this!
I really encourage you all to see this movie. It is truly remarkable.
