This was only my second year at Flame Con, but just like last year my weekend visiting the convention was a bit of a whirlwind. For the first time I was actually able to travel with Krista, she also covered Flame Con for The Nerdy Girl Express this year, and we left ridiculously early on Saturday the 17th and we left very early on Sunday the 18th. While she and I both live in New York state now, we had very specific trains to catch in order to get back to where we live, which is practically in Canada. This month I had the opportunity to read the new release, Ziggy, Stardust and Me, and wanted to devote this week’s The Bi Line to this remarkable teen read. Set in 1973, the story follows sixteen-year-old Jonathan Collins, who feels completely alone. Bullied, anxious, and asthmatic, the teenager finds a safe haven in his own imagination where he can find guidance through his hero, David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust, and dead relatives, including his mother. Within this world of his creation he can be anyone and anything, even “normal.” As a boy who likes other boys, Jonathan is going through treatments to “help him become normal,” but someone comes into his life that changes everything. Web, a boy with secrets of his own, provides a sort of escape that Jonathan never expected and through this he may finally be able to find acceptance. I’ve been playing a little bit of television catch up now that my schedule is a little bit more flexible. Recently I finally watched Tales of the City, the recent limited series on Netflix, and the new CW show, In The Dark. While that second show isn’t focused on a queer character, her best friend identifies as a lesbian and I wanted to delve into her role. This article is a bit of a catch all since these shows aren’t exactly connected to each other, but that’s sometimes how my watching catch up goes. During Pride Month I went on a hunt to find books and movies that would help me to grow my understanding of different people within the LGBTQ+ community. Now I will admit I was trying to save a bit of money so I stuck to streaming services and library related apps. In my quest for knowledge I watched all of the series Gaycation, the documentary Growing Up Coy, and a few other assorted shows and movies that were recommended in various Pride watch lists. While I was watching I also did a bit of a deep dive into comics and books on the Hoopla app, this app shares digital books you can read through an account connected to your library card and many libraries use this program. During this hunt I found Gender Queer, a touching memoir that I mentioned on Twitter immediately after I finished it, and I also found the comic I want to focus on today, Ask Me About Polyamory. This week I am delving into some web series that I have already previously discussed in some capacity on The Nerdy Girl Express. I absolutely adore both I Put the Bi in Bitter and Barbelle, both of which I covered in Fangirl Freakouts videos, and second seasons of both released earlier this year. This is another quick throwback to Artist Alley at ClexaCon, which probably shows how much I either spent in money or spent in the area. On Sunday I wandered around and while that was a day I tried to not spend too much, I did make sure to pick up cards and other info cards to give myself some time to check out artists in more detail. One of the items I picked up was all about something called Shadowburg. I will admit I did think this was a comic at first glance, but it turns out this is actually an online game. This year at ClexaCon while wandering Artist Alley I noticed a table with some super exciting merch I hadn’t seen anywhere else yet. On this specific table was not only Couple-ish art, but buttons. I was hooked and had to buy them. I chatted with one of the people behind the table and they mentioned that there was also an online comic that I could check out. Now they had me with Couple-ish, but I was definitely stoked to check out the comic. For this Bi-Line I’m focusing on Zyra Comics and their digital comic, Nymph. I love frequenting my local comic book shop, not just because it is great to be in a physical space full of nerdy things, but because the staff are so great. They frequently suggest reads for me when I come in, which is great for fulfilling my quest for comic knowledge even if it isn’t great for my wallet. During one of my visits two of the people there mentioned there was a book they thought I’d like. They showed me the first volume of Sunstone and insisted that while the book was pretty steamy, that the plot was so good that they frequently recommended it to their over 18 readers. This first book set me down a path of discovery and excitement and I fell completely head over heels for the world of Sunstone. Sometimes suggested watching on streaming services can be helpful, especially when they lead you to a series that you’ve never heard of before. Lip Service is a British television drama set in Glasgow, Scotland which was literally described by Hulu as like The L Word. When I first started the show I was struck with a tremendous amount of deja vu, not because of the plot, but because of the styling of the main character, Frankie.
