Goodbye #GH ‘s Oscar Nero via @stacyamiller85 @GeneralHospital @itsgarrentho #GeneralHospital #GH56 #RIPOscarNero

On ABC’s General Hospital, teen Oscar Nero (Garren Stitt) succumbs to his illness.

This article contains spoilers. If you haven’t seen the Wednesday, May 1, 2019 episode of General Hospital, please do not continue reading.

When Oscar was diagnosed with a fatal tumor, it was only a matter of time before his life ended.

His parents Kim Nero (Tamara Braun) and Drew Cain (Billy Miller) sought to have him enter a clinical trial with the hope that the tumor would be eradicated. Oscar was reluctant at first to participate in the trial, reasoning that if there was a chance it didn’t work he didn’t want to waste what precious time he had left in a hospital. The young Nero obtained Alexis Davis (Nancy Grahan) as his lawyer and pursued becoming emancipated from his parents in order to have a say over his medical decisions. He even broke up with girlfriend Josslyn Jax (Eden McCoy) in order to spare her the pain of watching him die.

But once Josslyn learned the truth about Oscar’s tumor, her love and devotion to him grew stronger and she was determined to stand by his side no matter what happened. Joss’ support made Oscar want to fight as well. He dropped the emancipation suit and moved back home with his mother.

Josslyn gave Oscar a five year planner as a Christmas present to record everything he wanted to do.  When Dr. Terry Randolph (Cassandra James) revealed the clinical trial hadn’t shrunk his tumor (it actually grew), Oscar decided to use the five year planner as a bucket list, crossing off the things he did as he accomplished them. He was going to enjoy whatever time he had left with the girl he loved. Unfortunately, Oscar’s condition deteriorated and he had numerous seizures.

Kim and Oscar moved into the Quartermain mansion to spend his final days with his family. Oscar announced he wanted to add Quartermaine to his last name. Both Oscar and Josslyn showed strength and maturity beyond their years as the end neared.

On the Wednesday, May 1, 2019 episode of General Hospital, a weak and near death Oscar hallucinated that a miracle had been granted and his tumor disappeared. He was healthy again to live a long life. But viewers knew this wasn’t true as the teen kept seeing his great grandparents Lila and Edward Quartermaine (The late Anna Lee and John Engle. Stand-ins played Lila and Edward).  This hallucination made Oscar realize that although his loved ones would miss him after he was gone, they’d have to move on with their lives and he needed to let go as well.

After he died, Oscar’s spirit saw Lila and Edward again at his room door at the Quartermaine mansion. After kissing Josslyn goodbye, he walked with his great grandparents as they escorted him on his next journey.

This was a poignantly written and acted story. When a young person is diagnosed with a fatal illness, it’s heartbreaking thinking of potential that will never be realized due to cruel fate.

Young actors and 2019 Daytime Emmy nominees Garren Stitt (Oscar), Eden McCoy (Josslyn) and Will Lipton (Cameron) have shown talent beyond their years with this challenging story.

RIP Oscar Nero.
