How General Hospital Changed Its Nurses Ball Due To Coronavirus via @stacyamiller85 @GeneralHospital #GH #GeneralHospital

Normally General Hospital airs its annual Nurses Ball episodes in May. But due to the corona virus pandemic, the ABC daytime drama was forced to shut down production in March.  Repeats aired during the months of May, June and July. Many fans wondered whether GH would just skip the Nurses Ball this year. Fortunately, this wasn’t the case.

The question would be how could General Hospital pull off an extravaganza like the Nurse’s Ball amid filming safety restrictions posed by COVID-19.

The Nurses Ball was founded by Lucy Coe (Lynn Herring) in 1994 as a way to raise money for HIV and AIDS research. The annual event features performances by many prominent Port Charles citizens. It is full of entertainment and intrigue both at the ball and behind the scenes where story line developments often happen during ball week.

However this year’s 2020 Nurses Ball looked different from the balls of the past. At the start of the Nurses Ball, Mistress of Ceremonies Lucy Coe announced the ball would be a telethon with volunteers answering phones accepting donations. In addition to the HIV and AIDS causes, a portion of the proceeds would benefit front line workers like EMTs, fire fighters, doctors and nurses to get them the needed equipment to do their jobs. Sonny, Nikolas and Valentin all offered to match the funds raised.

Making the Nurses Ball a telethon benefiting front line workers was a clever way to incorporate the reel world with the real world as well as a nice shout out and acknowledgement of those who have gone above and beyond to keep us safe.

Instead of scenes with a crowded ball room at The Metro Court and performers on stage, viewers saw volunteers Sonny (Maurice Benard), Carly (Laura Wright), Michael (Chad Duell), Willow (Katelyn MacMuellen), Peter (Wes Ramsey), Anna (Finola Hughes), Mac (John J. York), Robert (Tristan Rogers), Spinelli (Bradford Anderson), Sam (Kelly Monaco), Nina (Cynthia Watros), Jax (Ingo Radmacher), Valentin (James Patrick Stuart), Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst), Franco (Roger Howath), Ava (Maura West), Nikolas (Marcus Coloma), Lulu (Emme Rylan) and Dustin (Mark Lawson) manning the phones.

Trina, Cameron, Josslyn, Ned, Olivia, Jax, Nina, Valentin and the GH nurses all performed. And Maxie (Kristen Storms) mistakenly revealed her pregnancy to Peter, the volunteers and television audiences.

But the real drama involved Nelle (Chloe Lanier) and her scheme to kidnap son Wiley with reluctant new hubby Julian’s (William deVry) assistance. Brook Lynn (Briana Lane) overhearing and confronting Nelle resulted in her life hanging in the balance after Nelle slashed her in the throat with scissors.

I praise the cast, crew and writers of General Hospital for pulling off entertaining and exciting Nurses Ball episodes.
